WikEditing Quick Start

From WikEd

Jump to: navigation, search

When you click on a link in WikEd, you'll either go to an existing page or (if no one has written that page yet) an editor screen.

If you want to edit an existing page just click on the edit button at the top of the screen and you'll go into the editor.

Wiki has its own special formatting commands (not the same as HTML). You can get a quick hint on syntax by clicking one of the buttons at the top of the editor window. Here are some generally useful commands:

To add a link to an external web site, type an opening square bracket, then the URL, then a space, then the descriptive text for the URL, then a closing square bracket.

For example, a link to the CTER home page would look like this in the editor:

[http://cter.ed.uiuc.edu CTER Home Page]

and would look like this in the normal page display:

CTER Home Page.

To add a link to an internal WikEd page, start with two opening square brackets, then enter the name of the page, and finish with two closing square brackets.

An internal link would look like this in the editor:

[[Some Internal Page]]

and would look like this in the normal page display:

Some Internal Page

Note that you can create a link to an internal page even if it doesn't exist. That's the cool thing about Wiki! You can add entries without actually creating them, then come back and write them later (if you procrastinate long enough, someone else will write them :-)). Neat, huh?
