The effects of "schooling" according to John Taylor Gatto
From WikEd
Have childrens' reading levels, general knowledge, or potential for greateness improved since American public education became mandatory?
Why do so many children dislike school?
What kind of people does school train children to become?
John Taylor Gatto (former New York Teacher of the Year) wisely brings up questions like those above that people ought to be asking. I would recommend A Different Kind of Teacher for educators and The Underground History of American Education for anyone interested in history and the origin of public schooling. His books are very provocative.
One disclaimer: Gatto uses many citations, but the points he tries to prove by those citations are sometimes a bit of a stretch. Check his sources out before you believe the claims he makes by them.
