From the classroom to virtual learning spaces: Planning for supporting teaching and learning of the future
I came across some interesting reading about what will be required of higher level educational institutions to support the emerging shift from traditional classroom (physical space) to the virtual space. According to "Brown and Lippincott (2003)":http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/eqm0312.pdf, colleges and universities will need to think beyond the status quo of planning for classroom space renovations (the core learning environment, para 2), to expanding the notion of 'classroom' that can support learning outside of the face-to-face context. These authors make compelling arguments for expanding one's thinking about our capability to support teaching and learning beyond the traditional concept of the classroom, and for ensuring that learning space design takes into consideration other activities such as faculty development, infrastructure development, ongoing maintenance and user support as we shift to a broader scope of planning.
