I used Cooperative learning all the time in my fifth grade classroom. In science class it was especially useful. I made sure the groups were no more than 4 students and that the groups had a mixture of high to low ability students. One of the units in science I especially enjoyed teaching was using LEGO's to teach simple machines. One day one of the students in the group would be foreman, another would be builder, and another one would be the parts manager. They would switch jobs each day so that everyone got to do one of the jobs. It is very important that the teacher move around the classroom and make sure everyone gets a chance at doing his/her job.
