Talk:Art Education

An interesting topic regarding Art Education is the aspect of grading. I would like to see some discussion on the grading tactics used by Art teachers. Obviously, it is useful to have a rubric of sorts in any project involving various efforts that must be completed within a certain timeline. I'm talking about the depth or perfection of the work- If a student is flawless in his effort, follows instructions, does all the techniques, but really has no art ability, does he get an A? If the very talented student produces a beautiful artwork even though many steps of the rubric were omitted, is this graded lower? I have always found this to be such a difficult area. The talented artist must be taught discipline and be challenged, the disciplined student must be taught improved skill.

Grades in either case can either motivate or demotivate. If the class is taken with no grade, then, Art is relegated to being a subject area that doesn't really matter in the eyes of the students.
