The common or historical understanding of the word is from the natural sciences referring to the natural sciences and primary definition of the development or evolution of a GROUP of organisms. However, the following group of definitions more clearly apply to the social sciences for the development of a species, tribe or racial group.

1)The evolutionary development and history of a species or higher taxonomic grouping of organisms. Also called phylogenesis.
2)The evolutionary development of an organ or other part of an organism: the phylogeny of the amphibian intestinal tract.
3)The historical development of a tribe or racial group.
