Let's use this page to make and edit a checklist of ways to show (through observation) that "true technology integration" is probably happening. Please put any discussion that you would like to add about this checklist on the accompanying discussion page, accessed by clicking on the "discussion" tab near the top of the screen.

  • Active student engagement is one attribute of technology integration, like we saw in the Edutopia examples.
  • Activities are happening that wouldn't be possible without the technology or that allow us to do something we've always done but in a better way. Michael Roy, IT director at Wesleyan University, commented recently in an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education that "We have seen a rapid shift from print information to digital material. Yet most digital products closely resemble their print counterparts -- the book, the article, the overhead slide -- and do not take full advantage of the digital medium. What might digital scholarship and teaching materials look like?" He cites the Valley of the Shadow project as one example of what digital materials might look like. Teachers could make use of these materials to provide student access to primary sources like newspapers articles and census records.
  • There is a clear purpose for using the technology that can be articulated by both the teacher and the students. The use of technology supports the objectives. The use of technology is clearly related to educational goals and objectives of student learning.
  • Control of and responsibility for student learning shifts from teacher to student as technology becomes more integrated.
  • Technology is used to support/enhance the learning of skills and content. The goal of the use of technology is not the acquisition of the technology skill. Those skills have already been learned or the learning of these skills can be embedded in the greater, content-oriented goal.
  • The use of technology may allow experiences that closely resemble the work of individuals in a given discipline, such as using global positioning systems (GPS) in an earth science class.
